'Faux' boom in the global fashion industry Updated: 2020-01-17 04:09:11 KST

Customers browse through winter clothes, trying to find the perfect coat to withstand the cold winter.
But instead of real mink and fox fur, the coats at this store are actually made of artificial fur.

"Fake fur coats are not just eco-friendly, they're just as warm and durable. I think that's why more people are buying them."

"This store specializes in artificial fur coats. It has seen its sales more than double this winter, compared to the year before."

The fashion industry is also focusing on manufacturing environmentally-friendly clothes,… such as producing artificial filling made from recycled plastics.

"There are a lot of consumers, especially millennials in their 20s and 30s, who are interested in eco-friendly fashion. They prefer padding stuffed with artificial fillings or faux fur coats that don't cause harm to animals."

The demand for ethical and sustainable fashion is not just happening in South Korea, but is part of a global shift within the fashion industry.
An increasing number of global luxury brands are refusing to use fur.
Chanel announced in late 2018 that it will no longer use exotic animal skins or fur in all its future collections.
Prada also joined the anti-fur movement, officially banning animal fur starting with their spring 2020 women's collections.
Even the Queen of England is following the trend for ethical fashion,… she has vowed to go fur-free,… according to her senior dresser last November.
Experts say this global shift is just beginning.

"Faux fur coats are prefered by most people because they are more easily washed, weigh less, are warmer, and are cheaper than real fur coats.
In the future, faux fur coats will further thrive, as the making of artificial fur will get easier with the development of technology."

The expert added that demand for ethical and sustainable fashion will continue to grow due to rising awareness among consumers.
