The Russian government has resigned to make way for major new constitutional changes proposed by President Vladimir Putin.
Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev submitted his resignation on Wednesday shortly after Putin announced his plan to shift some power between the presidency and parliament.
In televised remarks, Putin said Medvedev will take up a new position as a deputy head of the presidential Security Council.
The Kremlin said Russia's tax service chief Mikhail Mishustin has been appointed as the new prime minister.
Some watchers say the move is designed to allow Putin to extend his rule.
