U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper has expressed concerns about Beijing's 'destabilizing' activities near Taiwan and in the South China Sea.
According to the Pentagon, during a phone conservation with his Chinese counterpart Thursday, Esper said it was important China abides by international laws, rules and norms, and meets its international commitments.
Esper also reiterated the importance of a constructive and stable relationship between the two sides.
However,.. China's Xinhua News Agency reported that his Chinese counterpart urged the U.S. side to "stop erroneous words and deeds", and "avoid taking dangerous moves that may escalate the situation."
The call was the first between the two since March.
