S. Korea announces COVID-19 vaccination plan for 4th quarter Updated: 2021-09-28 05:58:26 KST

South Korea's health authorities have released a list of COVID-19 vaccine recipients for the fourth quarter.
The goal is to achieve a higher vaccination rate as well as further halting the spread of virus.

"The goal is to expand the group of those getting vaccinations, the vaccination rate, and to give out booster shots for high-risk groups to go back to something of a normal life.

Starting October 18th, around 136-thousand pregnant women will be eligible to get a first shot of Moderna or Pfizer.
Vaccination booking will kick off on the 8th of October.
Health authorities are stressing that pregnant women are six times more likely to develop severe COVID-19 symptoms.
However, authorities added that getting vaccinated is totally up to them and say to double-check with a doctor beforehand.
Among the list of eligible vaccine recipients some 2.7 million children between 12 and 17 can get their first jabs beginning October 18th.
Considering their school schedule those aged 16 to 17 will be the first group beginning October 18th.
And those aged 12 to 15 will get theirs at the beginning of November.
Only the Pfizer vaccine will be available to them and getting parental permission is a must.
And, to deal with the more contagious Delta variant authorities have announced that booster shots will be given to those in high-risk groups.
Starting with medical workers at COVID-19 treatment hospitals they will be getting the additional Pfizer shots from October 12th.
People at nursing homes and hospitals are next from November 10th and medical workers at other hospitals after that.
Also, those over 60 who are six months after being fully vaccinated will be get their booster shots gradually.
To reach herd immunity as quickly as possible at least by November the authorities are also shortening the mRNA vaccination interval time from six weeks to five or even four weeks.
The new vaccination schedule will be automatically adjusted starting Tuesday.
