U.S. State Department Press Secretary emphasizes importance of S. Korea-U.S.-Japan cooperation after Japan boycotted joint press conference Updated: 2021-11-23 09:42:34 KST

The U.S. State Department spokesman has emphasized the importance of trilateral cooperation between South Korea, U.S., and Japan to overcome issues with North Korea and in the Indo-Pacific region.
The remarks followed questions on Monday regarding Japanese Vice Foreign Minister Takeo Mori's boycott of a joint press event with his South Korean and U.S. counterparts Choi Jong-gun and Wendy Sherman.
He added that despite the absence of the Japanese official at a press briefing that followed trilateral talks the meeting itself was constructive as the three countries discussed areas of concern and their common objectives.
It was later explained that Mori's boycott was due to a recent trip by South Korea's national police chief to Dokdo Island, a South Korean territory Tokyo claims as its own.
