South Korea's Danyang-gun County, known for its natural scenery, is taking steps to get designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark.
The county said Monday that it's applied with the Ministry of Environment to become a candidate.
If approved, Danyang will apply with UNESCO next January.
After a review and an in-person visit by UNESCO, afinal decision would come next September and the designation made in January 2025.
This would make Danyang South Korea's 5th Global Geopark.
The four others are in Cheongsong, Jeju Island, Hantangang and Mudeungsan.
Natural attractions in Danyang include Dodamsanbong three rock islets in the middle of the Namhangang River and Gosudonggul Cave.
A Danyang-gun official told Arirang that he expects the UNESCO designation will bring in more tourists.
