It has emerged that South Korea and the U.S. are NOT discussing the possible deployment of South Korean troops to the Strait of Hormuz as part of their defense cost-sharing negotiations.
South Korea's chief negotiator for the talks, Jeong Eun-bo, confirmed on Thursday that protection of the global oil supply link from Iran-related risks was not on the table.
Jeong made the comments on his way back to Seoul, after the latest round of negotiations in Washington ended without an agreement on Wednesday.
He added the two sides are not discussing anything outside the framework of the Special Measures Agreement.
While Jeong did mention Seoul has been emphasizing its arms purchases from Washington, he said they are not discussing any specific arms purchases or considering making payments out of the defense ministry's budget.
