The world's number-one ranked player in men's tennis, Novak Djokovic, will likely face deportation in the coming hours after the Federal Court of Australia dismissed his bid to remain in the country and defend his title at the Australian Open.
In applying for his visa, Djokovic, who is unvaccinated, had filed for an exemption.
To the court, he appealed against the cancelation of his visa by Australia's immigration minister, who had reasoned that his presence in the country would promote anti-vaccination sentiment and even civil unrest.
The court is expected to explain its own reasoning in the coming days, but it noted that its decision was only about whether the immigration minister's decision was "rational" or "legally unreasonable."
