S. Korea reports first cases of Omicron variant; five people confirmed

South Korea has its first cases of the (oh-mee-cron)Omicron variant .
Authorities confirmed five cases of the new strain on Wednesday.
A married couple in their 40s contracted the variant after visiting Nigeria in mid-November.
Their friend was also infected with the variant.
Two unvaccinated women in their 50s living in Gyeonggi-do Province, also recently returned from Nigeria, have been infected as well.
Officials are waiting for the results of four more suspected cases.
