Newly designed S. Korean passport available starting from Dec. 21

A newly designed South Korean passport is available for citizens starting December 21st.
The country's Foreign Ministry said that the new electronic passport is more secure.
This is because the personal information page is made of polycarbonate, a type of thermoplastic, making it more durable and heat-resistant.
The picture and information sections are engraved with lasers so are harder to forge.
But, resident registration numbers are not included, so the new version can no longer be used as an identification card domestically.
Up until June next year, people will be able choose between the older green version or the new, navy blue one if renewing.
The price is the same at around 42 U.S. dollars and previously-issued passports can be used until they have expired.

And starting from next year, people will be able to have two phone numbers for a single handset.
The Science Ministry said that the "eSIM" service will be available from next September.
Unlike the conventional "USIMs," "eSIMs" are not physically plugged into the phone; instead information is downloaded using a QR code.
This means that the process can be completed without physically visiting a mobile shop and changing network providers is more straightforward.

And, there will be an upgraded, faster Wi-Fi service on the country's subway trains.
The Science Ministry on Tuesday announced that is raising output standards for some parts of the 6GHz band to use what's called "Wi-Fi 6E."
In other words, the internet connection will be up to 10 times faster.
The ministry official added that the three major network providers, SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus, will cooperate with the revised policies.
The government plans to carry out more research until February next year prior to announcing the new administrative notice.
