Seoul to cancel annual bell-ringing ceremony due to surge in COVID-19 cases Updated: 2020-12-06 09:05:40 KST

The city of Seoul has decided to cancel festivities downtown for New Year's Eve, including the famous bell-ringing ceremony at Bosingak Pavilion.
They were going to try hold it on a smaller scale, but the recent surge in COVID-19 cases has apparently made that unfeasible too.
The ceremony at Bosingak was first held in 1953, the same year the Korean War ended, and this is the first time it's been canceled.
Officials will also be looking at ways to discourage people from gathering on New Year's Eve in the area where the live ceremony would have been held.
