High-level security talks between S. Korea, China begin in Tianjin Updated: 2021-12-03 06:36:36 KST

South Korea's national security adviser Suh Hoon and China's top diplomat Yang Jiechi have started their two-day talks,covering a range of issues,including Seoul's push for an end-of-war declaration.
Suh arrived in the Chinese city of Tianjin earlier on Thursday, and met with Yang in a hotel in the evening.

In his opening remarks, Suh highlighted the long partnership between the two countries. in pursuing denuclearization and peace on the Korean Peninsula, and called for Beijing's continued support.
Suh also thanked China for its quick customs clearance for urea, that helped South Korea to relieve the shortage of urea water solution, that was caused by Beijing's export curbs.

Yang, calling Suh as "a long friend",.. echoed the importance of strategic negotiations and partnerships.
He said the two countries have achieved a "win-win development," and that China wishes to contribute to international peace and security.

In the closed-door session, the end-of-war declaration is highly likely to have had topped the agenda.
Suh is assumed to have shared the latest from Seoul and Washington's talks on the matter while reaffirming China's intention to be involved in the process.
If China officially participates in the declaration, a four-way discussion could be held in the near future. between the two Koreas, U.S. and China the core purpose of which, is to bring the North back to the negotiating table.

From China's side, Yang could have asked Seoul not to get involved in the U.S.-led alliance to counter Beijing.
Also discussed, could be this year’s SCM joint statement between Seoul and Washington, that mentioned Taiwan for the first time a sensitive issue for China.
The talks will last until Friday, when the results will be officially announced in a press briefing.
