UN adopts resolution on N. Korean human rights violations for 17th straight year Updated: 2021-12-17 17:02:12 KST

The Seoul-based National Human Rights Commission of Korea has welcomed the UN's latest resolution on North Korea's human rights violations.
Voicing hope that the resolution will encourage Pyeongyang to be more proactive on the issue, the chairperson of the commission, Song Doo-hwan, said on Friday that the commission will work with the international community to substantially improve the human rights of the North Korean people.
For the 17th consecutive year, the UN adopted a resolution on North Korea's human rights abuses, condemning its systematic and gross human rights violations.
Adopted by consensus at the General Assembly on Thursday, the latest resolution expressed concern over persistent reports of "torture and other cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment."
To better overall human rights conditions, the passage underlined the importance of diplomatic engagement, including inter-Korean dialogue.
Also included were calls for the North to shut political prison camps and immediately release all political prisoners without conditions.
This year's resolution urged Pyeongyang to work with international bodies to ensure timely delivery of COVID-19 vaccines as well as resume reunions for families who have been separated since the Korean War.
For the first time, concerns over continued violations of the human rights of unrepatriated prisoners of war and their descendants were included.
A total of 60 countries including European Union members, the U.S. and Japan sponsored the resolution.
South Korea did not co-sponsor the resolution for the third consecutive year, but it did join the document's adoption by consensus.
Insisting that the accusations are false, the North's ambassador to the UN, Song Kim, called the resolution a serious violation of the regime's sovereignty.
