Son Heung-min and Hwang Hee-chan likely to miss S. Korea's upcoming World Cup Qualifiers Updated: 2022-01-10 17:06:05 KST

And time now for "This Week in Sports" and so joining us in the studio is our sports editor, Paul Neat.
Paul, let's begin with the Korean men's national football team.
Paulo Bento and his team are in Turkey at the moment ahead of two friendlies.
No Europe-based stars for these friendlies but now it looks like Son Heung-min and Hwang Hee-chan will both miss the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Yes, that’s right. Son Heung-min has been ruled out for around a month due to injury.
That means that he is most likely going to miss Korea’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers… leaving manager Paulo Bento without his captain.
Son was substituted during the second half of Tottenham’s 2-0 defeat at Chelsea on Wednesday, and on Thursday reported muscle pain.
Spurs boss Antonio Conte had originally said that Son would be out for the international break but later told in-house media service Spurs TV that Son will be out for two weeks, suggesting that he may return at the end of January.
And, Hwang Hee-chan picked up a hamstring injury on December 15th and is also a major doubt leaving Bento searching for 'plan B.'
The Korean national team take on Iceland this Saturday and then Moldova on Friday the 21st in two friendlies.
Then… they take on Lebanon on Thursday 27th and then Syria on February 1st in two away World Cup qualifiers.

Sticking with football, Son's club team Tottenham Hotspur were involved in the FA Cup over the weekend and managed to avoid a giant-killing.
But other Premier League teams did not.

No, that’s right. Spurs survived a bit of a scare, eventually overcoming League One side Morecambe FC.
But it was the Lancashire side… who sit 59 places and three divisions below Tottenham… which took the lead.
Center back and captain Anthony O’Connor on 33 minutes.
But the Spurs fightback began in the 74th minute with Harry Winks before late goals from Lucas Moura and Harry Kane sent Tottenham through.
But other Premier League clubs weren’t so lucky.
Newcastle United lost 1-0 at home to third-tier side Cambridge United… Arsenal lost 1-0 to Championship outfit Nottingham Forest.
The FA Cup is in its 150th year and is regarded as the oldest cup competition in world football.

Now just 25 days to go to the Winter Olympics and we now know that Cha Jun-hwan will be heading to his second consecutive Winter Games.

Yes, that’s right. Figure skater Cha Jun-hwan has booked his place at Beijing 2022 after winning the final national team trials on Sunday.
Cha won the men's singles event in the second leg of the two-part Beijing Olympic trials in the city of Uijeongbu.
He finished with 283.31 points overall, with 185 points in Sunday's free skate and 98.31 points in Saturday's short program.
Cha is only the third South Korean male singles figure skater to compete in back-to-back Winter Olympics.
Meanwhile, Lee Si-hyeong finished second overall to clinch the second and final ticket to Beijing.
In the women's singles, You Young and Kim Ye-lim have both qualified for their first Winter Games.

Sticking with winter sports.
South Korean alpine snowboarder Lee Sang-ho picked up another medal amid the current World Cup season.

Yes, Lee Sang-ho earned bronze over the weekend.
It came in the men's parallel giant slalom race on Saturday at the International Ski Federation World Cup event in Switzerland.
Lee beat Mirko Felicetti of Italy by point-44 seconds in what’s referred to as the "small final," or the race for third place.
This was Lee's fourth medal in five World Cup appearances this season… having also won a gold and two silver medals.
Lee won silver medal in the parallel giant slalom at PyeongChang 2018 as the first South Korean to grab an Olympic medal in a snow discipline.

To domestic baseball now.
Dates for the 2022 KBO season have been announced.

That they have. We are looking at an April 2nd start date for what will be the 40th KBO season.
As announced by KBO last Thursday, all 10 teams will play 144 matches as per usual.
Opening day games will be played at the home stadiums of the top five teams from last season… apart from LG Twins who share Jamsil Stadium in Seoul with the Doosan Bears.
But, there will not be a break for the 2022 Asian Games which runs from September 10th to the 25th in Hangzhou, China.
The baseball tournament will run from September 12th to 24th.
KBO teams will have to continue without their national team players during the tournament.
The 2022 All-Star Game is scheduled to be held on July 16th, with a seven-day All-Star break from July 15th to July 21st.
A number of events are also in the works to mark the 40th anniversary of KBO… including a Classic Series between the league's founding teams.

And finally to tennis and the current situation in Australia with Novak Djokovic.
He won his court case earlier today.
What can you tell us?

Earlier today, Djokovic won his court case and can take part in the Australian Open.
The Australian government's decision to cancel his visa has been quashed.
Judge Anthony Kelly explained that Djokovic had not been given sufficient notice of his visa cancelation.
Reigning Australian Open champion Djokovic landed late Wednesday with a visa and a vaccination exemption to play but border officials revoked them.
The authorities had originally said that Djokovic did not qualify for an exemption as anyone entering Australia needs to be fully vaccinated.
The Open begins on January 17th.

Thank you for that, Paul. See you next week.
Thank you.
