The UN unanimously approved a resolution on Friday denouncing human rights violations and crimes against humanity in North Korea that have been exacerbated by the pandemic due to a lack of coronavirus vaccines.
This marks the 20th straight year that such a resolution has been passed by the 47-member Human Rights Council.
But for the fourth straight year, South Korea did not participate in this year's consensus mainly not to provoke North Korea.
A South Korean foreign ministry official said its non-participation is part of the government's efforts to bring "practical developments" for the Peninsula Peace Process but adds it's willing to work with the international community to improve human rights in the North.
