BOK governor says 50bp rate hikes 'not completely off the table' Updated: 2022-05-16 17:06:37 KST

South Korea could be about to see interest rates rise faster than the traditional 25 basis points at the Bank of Korea's meetings later this year.
BOK Governor Rhee Chang-yong said Monday that a 50-point hike is not completely off the table.
But, he said, that decision will be made only after analyzing data due out in July and August.
Some analysts have played down the possibility rate hikes that big, but Rhee's comments indicate that inflation is still the BOK's policy priority.
Inflation has been fueled by soaring energy prices, the weakening Korean won and the U.S. Fed's own aggressive rate hikes.
Governor Rhee took office last week and is expected to chair his first policy meeting next Thursday.
