President Yoon Suk-yeol heads to the southwestern city of Gwangju on Wednesday to attend a ceremony commemorating the May 18th 1980 Pro-Democracy movement.
Senior officials at the top office said Tuesday that President Yoon's trip to the liberal stronghold shows his desire for national integration and unity.
They added that it's a groundbreaking step toward new politics.
He's expected to deliver an unprecedented message as a conservative President.
Some 100 lawmakers from the People Power Party, members of the Cabinet and his senior presidential secretaries are due to accompany Yoon upon the President's request.
He'll be taking the high-speed KTX train from Seoul and plans to meet the families of the victims while he's in Gwangju.
