Deputy Combined Forces Command Gen. Kim Seong-kyum to lead Joint Chiefs of Staff Updated: 2022-05-25 18:03:44 KST

The Deputy Commander of the South Korea-U.S. Combined Forces Command, Army General Kim Seung-kyum, has been nominated to serve as the new Chairman of South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Coming just hours after Pyeongyang's missile launches on Wednesday, his nomination is part of the first reshuffle of the military command under the Yoon administration.
Kim was commissioned as second lieutenant in 1986, and has served as the Vice Chief of Staff of the Army and the head of the Third Corps.
If confirmed by the National Assembly, he would become the first graduate of the Korea Military Academy to lead the Joint Chiefs in nine years.
Also in Wednesday's reshuffle, nominated for Army Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Park Jeong-hwan, who currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs.
And to replace General Kim as Deputy Commander of Combined Forces Command -- Lieutenant General Ahn Byung-seok, who is currently the Vice Chief of Staff of the Army.
