Donna Welton named new U.S. envoy for defense cost-sharing negotiations with S. Korea Updated: 2020-08-04 06:00:24 KST

The U.S. State Department has named a new envoy for defense cost-sharing negotiations with South Korea, as well as other nations.
On Monday, the State Department announced Donna Welton, who recently served as the assistant chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy in Afghanistan, as the new envoy to succeed James DeHart, who was recently appointed as the U.S. coordinator for the Arctic region.
As a diplomat, Welton has over 25 years of experience, and has worked in countries including Finland and Indonesia and the U.S. missions to the UN.
The latest personnel shift comes amid renewed speculation the U.S. may pull troops from South Korea, if the defense cost-sharing negotiations continue to stall.
