There had been less than two weeks until the start of 2021 Winter Universiade in Lucerne, Switzerland, but the event has been scrapped due to the emergence of the Omicron variant of COVID-19.
Organizers made the decision Monday, after Switzerland imposed border restrictions on travelers from several countries where the new variant has been detected.
This includes Australia, the UK, the Netherlands, Hong Kong and others.
Athletes from those countries would need to quarantine for 10 days upon arrival.
The multi-sport event was scheduled to run from December 11th to the 21st.
