The Japanese government plans to move forward with a proposal to increase attendances at Olympic events this summer to ten thousand spectators or 50 percent of a venue's capacity.
This comes as authorities are set to decide on Thursday whether to end the COVID-19 state of emergency which covers Tokyo and other major cities and prefectures.
Under the current measures, only five thousand spectators are allowed.
As of Wednesday, Tokyo reported 501 new cases, the first time to surpass the 500-mark in nearly two weeks.
Japan overall logged 1,709 new cases with 80 more deaths.
Around six percent of the total population are currently fully vaccinated.
