Yoon dismisses police bureau controversy
Updated: 2022-06-23 13:27:49 KST
President Yoon Suk-yeol has dismissed concerns his administration wants to tighten its control over the police, as the Interior Ministry plans to establish a police bureau.
He said Thursday that there needs to be a control tower in place for the police while police work that requires "independence or neutrality" should be done according to laws and principles.
Critics argue that creating a police bureau under the government will ultimately undermine the independence of police investigations.
Citing the 'prosecution bureau' under the Justice Ministry, Yoon added the top office used to directly wield influence over the police under previous administrations, but his government scrapped it because Yoon thinks it's inappropriate.
