American artistic swimmer and two-time Olympic champion Anita Alvarez was rescued by her coach after losing consciousness and almost drowning.
Alvarez was at the end of her sole routine at the World Aquatic Championships in Budapest on Wednesday when she sank to the bottom of the pool.
Her coach Andrea Fuentes jumped into the water and lifted Alvarez to the surface where she received medical attention.
A statement from Fuentes later that day said that the athlete has been checked by doctors and is recovering.
This is not the first time the coach has rescued Alvarez, who previously lost consciousness at the end of her pairs routine during an Olympic qualification event in Spain last year.
