Suga says Japan's surge in cases unconnected to Olympics Updated: 2021-07-31 13:51:25 KST

COVID-19 cases are spiking in Japan and on Friday, the country recorded more than 10-thousand daily cases crossing the five-digit mark for two consecutive days.
At a press conference on Friday, Japan's Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said the virus is spreading rapidly because of the variants.
He added this is unconnected to the Olympics because foreign athletes didn't come into contact with local residents when they were entering the country.
In the meantime, the Japanese government decided to expand the current emergency declaration to four more prefectures including Osaka starting August 2nd until the end of the month.
Tokyo and Okinawa are already under a state of emergency.
