Yoon, Biden pledge to 'go together' in toasts at state dinner Updated: 2022-05-22 12:33:38 KST

"We go together."
This is the phrase the leaders stressed at Saturday night's banquet held at the National Museum of Korea.
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol reaffirmed his commitment to the alliance with the United States, saying that he seeks to build a promising future for the two countries.
He also vowed to broaden the scope of their ties.

This year marks the 140th anniversary of our diplomatic ties, and next year we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the South Korea-U.S. alliance. At today's summit, we reaffirmed the strength of our alliance and together sought a new promising future for our two countries. Sharing the universal values of liberal democracy, human rights and the rule of law, our alliance will go beyond security to a cutting-edge technology alliance and to a global comprehensive strategic alliance. Together with President Biden, we will create a vision for the future of the South Korea-U.S. alliance.

President Biden said he appreciated Mr. Yoon's warm welcome and called Saturday's meetings "very productive."
He said revitalizing the alliance is one of his "key foreign policy priorities" and that he hopes to build on their bilateral ties.

"So, I'd like to raise a glass. May the alliance between our two great nations continue to flourish for all the decades ahead. And as our combined forces say, 'we go together.'"

The main dish at the banquet was "bibimbap," a Korean rice dish with an array of vegetables.
It's a dish often served by Korean presidents as a symbol of harmony between the host and guest countries.
It was paired with a wine called Vaso, produced by the winery Dana Estates, which is run by a Korean in California.
First Lady Kim Keon-hee did not attend the event but briefly greeted President Biden beforehand.
The dinner was attended by 80 guests, including the heads of South Korea's top 10 conglomerates and other business leaders.
